When her alarm went off, Evie slapped out instinctively for the clock and shut it off before she realized she shouldn’t have been able to. She should have been on the couch. At least, that’s where she’d been the last time she remembered anything. On the couch, watching Griff breathe. He must have moved her after she fell asleep.

The act felt oddly more intimate even than the massage she had given him. Perhaps it was the vulnerability being asleep and having another person in complete control. Aside from the day she woke up in the hospital, when the last thing she remembered was counting backward before surgery, she had never allowed anyone that kind of liberty.

And he’d allowed it to her, as well, falling asleep in her bed, under her hands. Her heart squeezed, and she threw off the covers he’d drawn over her.

Still half-asleep, she staggered to the closet and poked through it for an outfit suitable for church. For church on the day a member of the community had died. Not that Lila Renner had been a friend—she’d never met the woman—but it still seemed hardly appropriate to wear one of the cheerful cotton sundresses she usually relied on for dressier occasions. Celia hadn’t packed much, but there was one pair of navy slacks she could wear with a white shirt and look reasonably sober.

Of course Celia, who quite happily spent most of her days in sweatpants tapping away on her laptop until she had to leave for the theater, hadn’t taken much care with the packing. Both the pants and the blouse would have to be ironed. Evie laid them on the bed, made herself a cup of coffee, and pulled the iron and board her aunt had given her from the back of the closet.

When most of the wrinkles had been subdued, Evie cleaned herself up, put on makeup to hide the ever-deepening circles beneath her eyes, and headed over to Patricia’s.

Her aunt, of course, was already up and fussing about in the kitchen. Did the woman never sleep? In the living room, Evie hesitated. Should she tell her aunt about Lila Renner? And if so, how? It was Sunday, which meant Griff would show up to take them to church. Maybe it was better to let him break the news. After all, he actually knew the people involved.

Bracing herself, she pasted on a smile and entered the kitchen. Patricia was standing at the refrigerator, the freezer door open.

“I can’t decide whether I want blueberry or cranberry this morning.”

“Pull out one of each, and I’ll split them with you.”

“Oh, that’s a good idea. And we’ll do one of each for Griffin. He can eat one and take one home with him.” She lifted the pastries from the freezer and laid them on the counter. “The boy needs his energy.”

The teakettle went off before Evie could react to that semi-suggestive statement, and Patricia set the cups on the table while Evie dealt with the frozen scones.

She had no sooner set them in the microwave than she heard the doorbell.
